Deborah Harkness Announces New Book

Deborah Harkness AuthorYou may not have noticed, but I am a huge fan of Deborah Harkness, an American Professor and author of A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night. A more adult version of Twilight let’s say, although so much more authentic and addictive. Deborah Harkness has a fascinating and mesmerising style of writing, combining interesting facts with imaginative fantasy. I had the lucky opportunity of hearing her give a talk last year, where I discovered her to be more down-to-earth and friendly than I imagined.

An update on her Facebook page and Website has revealed the title of the final instalment in the All Souls trilogy as well as a release date. Fans have been patiently waiting for this announcement, and I have to admit that when I heard news of an update, I immediately stopped what I was doing and ran to my computer to check it out.

The final book in the series is called: The Book of Life and will be released in America, Canada and here in the UK on July 15th 2014

And because she is so kind, she has teased us with a little description of what to expect.

After traveling through time in SHADOW OF NIGHT, the second book in Deborah Harkness’s enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the Deborah-Harkness-A-Discovery-of-Witches-UKhills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.

How tantalising is that! I’ve come to love Diana and Matthew’s adventure, especially in the second book, Shadow of Night. I reviewed it last year. Deborah Harkness is a master at weaving multiple plot lines across various time frames and indeed concerning different characters. I’m absolutely certain that The Book of Life will be the best yet; a fitting end to such a wonderful series. Whether it’s the central duo that catch you, or the multitude of side characters that hold a place in your heart, be sure to check back for a preview and look at the cover when more is revealed.

  1. I am beyond thrilled that we finally have a release date for the 3rd book! I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to see Professor Harkness speak at a reading. She’s a wonderful speaker – i envy her students! The next thing I’m waiting for is news about the movie! You should check out the devoted campaign to have Richard Armitage cast as Matthew Clairmont at
